Week 28 — Abiding and the Foundation of Obedience | Greg Broussard | Luke 6:46-49

Tension: Calling Him Lord vs. doing what He says

Formation Outcome: Obedience that builds stability

Grounding Questions:

•  What is the difference between calling Jesus “Lord” and actually submitting to Him as Lord?

•  When pressure comes, what usually reveals whether a person’s faith is built deeply or lightly?

Expository Teaching:

Luke 6 records Jesus confronting the gap between verbal confession and actual obedience. He asks a piercing question:

“Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”

This is one of the clearest obedience texts in the teachings of Jesus. The issue is not whether people are using religious language. They are calling Him “Lord.” The issue is whether their lives correspond to that confession.

Jesus then gives the image of two builders.

One hears His words and does them. That person is like someone who digs deep and lays the foundation on rock. When the flood comes, the house stands because it has been well built.

The other hears but does not obey. That person builds without a foundation. When the flood comes, the house collapses.

Both builders hear.

Both builders construct.

Both builders face the storm.

The difference is not exposure to truth. The difference is obedience to truth.

This is essential to the ABIDE theme. Abiding is not simply being near enough to hear Jesus. It is remaining connected enough to respond to Jesus.

The storm does not create the foundation. The storm reveals the foundation.

Obedience is not merely a moral duty. It is structural stability. A life that practices the words of Christ is built to endure pressure.

The tension is clear:

Religious language may impress people, but only obedient faith builds a life that can stand.

Group Discussion Questions:

•  Why is Jesus’ question in verse 46 so confronting?

•  What similarities do you notice between the two builders?

•  What is the true difference between the house that stands and the house that falls?

•  What area of your life needs a deeper foundation of obedience?
