Week 34 — Abiding in Stillness | Greg Broussard | Psalm 46:1–11

Tension: Panic and striving vs. stillness in God’s presence

Formation Outcome: God-centered confidence

Grounding Questions:

•  What situations make it hardest for you to be still?

•  How do people usually respond when life feels unstable or threatening?

Expository Teaching:

Psalm 46 is a song of confidence in God amid instability. The earth gives way. Mountains move. Waters roar. Nations rage. Kingdoms totter.

The imagery is large and unsettling.

Yet the repeated truth is that God is present:

“God is our refuge and strength…”

“The Lord of hosts is with us…”

The psalm does not call believers to stillness because nothing is happening. It calls them to stillness because God is present and sovereign while everything is happening.

Verse 10 says:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

This is not passive resignation. It is a command to stop striving, stop panicking, stop attempting to control what only God can rule.

Stillness becomes an act of trust.

Within the ABIDE theme, Psalm 46 reminds us that remaining in God sometimes looks like quiet confidence rather than frantic movement. Abiding is not inactivity; it is confidence rooted in the presence and rule of God.

The tension is between trying to secure ourselves through striving and resting in the God who is already our refuge.

Group Discussion Questions:

•  What images of instability appear in this psalm?

•  Why can believers be still even when circumstances are not calm?

•  What does it mean to know that God is God?

•  Where do you need to stop striving and practice stillness before God?
