Week 25 — Abiding Refuses to Shrink Back | Blake Hutchings| Hebrews 10:35-39

Tension: Pressure to retreat vs. perseverance in faith

Grounding Questions:

•  When life becomes difficult, are you more tempted to press forward or pull back?

•  What kinds of pressure cause believers to lose confidence?

Expository Teaching:

Hebrews was written to believers under pressure. Some were tempted to turn back because faithfulness had become costly. The writer encourages them:

“Do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.”

This passage speaks to the danger of spiritual retreat. The issue is not merely discouragement; it is the temptation to abandon confidence in Christ when endurance becomes necessary.

The writer says:

“You have need of endurance.”

Endurance is not passive waiting. It is faithful remaining under pressure. It is continuing to trust when immediate relief has not yet come.

Then the passage contrasts two ways of living:

The righteous live by faith.

But God takes no pleasure in shrinking back.

To shrink back is to retreat from trust, obedience, and allegiance. But the writer declares:

“We are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.”

This is ABIDE language in another form.

Abiding is refusing to disconnect when pressure increases.

The faithful remain because they know Christ is worth trusting beyond the present moment.
