Week 18 — Abiding and the Ministry of Reconciliation | Greg Broussard | 2 Corinthians 5:17-20

Expository Teaching

Paul explains that salvation is not only transformation—it is commissioning.

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

This phrase connects directly to the ABIDE theme. Being “in Christ” describes union, identity, and belonging. However, Paul immediately expands the implication:

“God… gave us the ministry of reconciliation.”

Reconciliation moves in two directions:

God reconciles us to Himself

God sends us to represent Him

Paul then describes believers as:

“Ambassadors for Christ”

An ambassador does not represent personal opinion. An ambassador represents the authority and message of another kingdom.

Remaining in Christ therefore produces both identity and assignment. We are not only recipients of grace—we are representatives of grace.

The tension in this passage is clear:

Many believers are comfortable receiving salvation but hesitant to represent Christ publicly. Yet abiding produces responsibility as well as renewal.
