Week 26 — Abiding and Obedience | James Daily | John 14:15–24

Tension: Loving Christ in word vs. loving Christ through obedience

Grounding Questions:

•  When you hear the word obedience, do you think more about duty, fear, love, or trust?

•  Why is it possible to say we love Christ while resisting what He commands?

Expository Teaching:

John 14 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse. Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure, but He does not leave them with emotional comfort alone. He connects love, obedience, and the ongoing presence of the Spirit.

Jesus says:

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

This statement does not reduce love to rule-keeping. Instead, Jesus teaches that genuine love expresses itself through responsive obedience. In Scripture, love is never merely sentimental. Love listens. Love trusts. Love follows.

The order matters. Jesus does not say, “Obey Me so that I will love you.” He says, in essence, “If you love Me, obedience will become the fruit of that love.”

This fits the ABIDE theme because obedience flows from relationship. The branch does not produce fruit apart from connection, and the disciple does not sustain obedience apart from love for Christ and life in the Spirit.

Jesus also promises the coming of “another Helper,” the Spirit of truth. This means obedience is not carried out in isolation. The Spirit dwells with and in the believer, enabling the life Christ commands.

The tension is clear:

We often want the comfort of Christ’s presence without the correction of Christ’s commands. But Jesus refuses to separate intimacy from obedience.

To abide in Christ is to remain close enough to hear Him, love Him enough to trust Him, and surrender enough to obey Him.
